Bill Walton, NBA Hall of Famer and Deadhead, Dies at 71

Legendary Center Remembered for Infectious Smile and Unwavering Spirit

Walton's passing leaves a void in the basketball community and beyond.

Bill Walton, the basketball Hall of Fame center who won two national titles at UCLA and two NBA championships, has died at the age of 71. Walton, who died Monday following a brief illness, was a proud Deadhead and one of the sport's most colorful personalities.

"Bill Walton was a true basketball legend, but he was also so much more than that," said former NBA commissioner David Stern. "He was a passionate advocate for peace and social justice, and he always had a smile on his face. He will be deeply missed by the entire basketball community."

Walton was born in La Mesa, California, in 1952. He attended UCLA, where he was a two-time national champion in 1972 and 1973. Walton was drafted number one overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1974 NBA draft. He played 10 seasons in the NBA, winning two championships with the Boston Celtics in 1986 and 1987.

Walton was known for his infectious smile and his unwavering spirit. He overcame numerous injuries throughout his career, including 13 broken noses and 10 knocked-out front teeth. Walton was also a vocal advocate for peace and social justice.

Walton's death is a great loss to the basketball community. He was a true legend both on and off the court, and he will be deeply missed.
